Kit Miracle -Contemporary Impressionism

Western Paintings

Paintings based on travels to the western United States.

Recent travels to the Western United States have had a profound effect upon my work.  I love the Rockies.  I could paint at the Grand Canyon for a hundred years and still not run out of inspiration.  And I'd move to Sedona, AZ in a heartbeat.  The red rocks call my name.  The paintings below are the results of these trips.  Step-by-step views of these paintings may be viewed at my blog at

Grand Canyon

Moran Point, Grand Canyon, oil on canvas, 18 x 24, by Kit Miracle

Painted from the famous Moran Point.  The colors change constantly, depending upon the time of day, season and weather.

Juniper Trees, Grand Canyon, oil on canvas, 24 x 30, by Kit Miracle

Old, gnarly juniper trees with cast shadows.  I loved the shape of these trees.  They almost seem as if they are dancing.

Grand Canyon View, Early Morning, oil on canvas, 16 x 20, by Kit Miracle

Grand Canyon View, Early Morning.  I like to get up very early to begin my plein air painting.  Although I worked a few hours on this painting on location, I had to finish it in the studio due to the rapidly changing light.  This is not unusual.  It is also easier to gauge the values and contrast under steady light rather than outdoor light which is sometimes too harsh.

Sedona, Arizona
Sunset, Sedona Hills, oil on canvas, 15 x 27, Kit Miracle
Sunset on the red rocks, Sedona, AZ.  It's difficult to capture the brilliance of these hills.  This is just north of Bell Rock.

Cathedral Rock, Sunrise II.  This was painted from the eastern side.  Oil on canvas, 12 x 16.

New Mexico
Pecos River Valley, New Mexico, oil on canvas, 18 x 24, Kit Miracle
This is a view of the beautiful Pecos River Valley painted from the top of the ruins of the Pecos Indians.  Every vista was breathtaking.  The scudding clouds cast fast-moving shadows across the hills. Oil on canvas, 18 x 24.
