Beach Couple

Description

This painting has a rather static composition.  The couple are in the middle of the painting but the high horizon line of the ocean and the slight diagonal of the beach helps keep the eye moving.  I was attracted to the total focus that the couple has for each other.  Also, I liked the challenge of painting the late afternoon light with the deepening shadows.  That was much more difficult than I thought it would be.

Another challenge was creating the background.  How many people to keep in, how many to leave out.  Here you see the small grouping on the right is painted very loosely so as to not attract too much attention but to add to the feel of the beach.  I kept adding and removing things for quite a while before I was satisfied.
